Brazil votes for UN resolution, but criticizes ‘indiscriminate sanctions’ against Russia

BRASILIA: Brazil’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ronaldo Costa Filho, reaffirmed on Wednesday the nation’s place in favor of an instantaneous ceasefire in Ukraine, but stated the indiscriminate utility of sanctions on Russia doesn’t result in the reconstruction of dialogue.

He made his assertion minutes after the UN General Assembly voted to reprimand Russia for invading Ukraine and demanded that Moscow cease preventing and withdraw its navy forces.

“The resolution cannot be seen as something that allows the indiscriminate application of sanctions. These initiatives do not lead to the reconstruction of a diplomatic dialogue and it brings consequences that go beyond the current situation,” he stated.

On Tuesday, President Jair Bolsonaro, who visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow forward of the invasion, stated Brazil would stay impartial within the battle, citing Russian fertilizers that are essential for the nation’s big agribusiness sector.
