Ford, Volvo join Redwood in EV battery recycling push in California

Ford Motor and Geely Automobile’s Volvo Cars will join battery recycling startup Redwood Materials in creating processes, beginning in California, to gather end-of-life batteries from electrical and hybrid automobiles and get well the supplies to be used in new batteries, the businesses stated Thursday.

Redwood Materials, co-founded by former Tesla govt JB Straubel, shaped an earlier partnership final fall with Ford to develop a “closed loop” or round provide chain for electrical automobile (EV) batteries, from uncooked supplies to recycling.

On Thursday, Redwood Materials stated it might work immediately with sellers and dismantlers in California to determine and get well end-of-life battery packs. The supplies in these packs can be recovered and recycled at Redwood Materials amenities in northern Nevada.

U.S. automakers Ford and General Motors Co (GM) have stated the battery recycling effort is essential in efforts to develop a home provide chain to satisfy growing EV demand.

GM and battery companion LG Energy Solution final 12 months introduced a partnership with startup Li-Cycle to recycle battery scrap materials from Ultium Cells, the GM-LG three way partnership that’s constructing battery crops in Ohio, Tennessee and Michigan.

Redwood Materials has comparable partnerships with battery makers Panasonic in Nevada and Envision AESC in Tennessee, in addition to with Amazon. Ford and Amazon are among the many buyers in Redwood Materials.
