The incident occurred throughout an all-night Christian worship event at New Kru Town, a neighborhood on the outskirts of the capital, Jalawah Tonpo stated.
“The doctors said 29 persons died and some are on the critical list,” Tonpo stated, calling into state radio from a close-by hospital. “This is a sad day for the country.”
Exodus Morias, a resident who attended the event, instructed Reuters the stampede started after a gaggle of armed males rushed the gang in an try and stage a theft.
“We saw a group of men with cutlasses and other weapons coming toward the crowd,” Morias stated. “While running, some people dropped and others fell on the ground and walked over them.”
Bands of Liberian road gangs referred to as Zogos generally commit robberies with machetes and different small weapons.
